Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1901 to 1912, where he devoted himself to neurological surgery. Arnold Carl Klebs was born in Berne, Switzerland, on March 17, 1870. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Zurich in 1888 and his M.D. degree from the University of Basel in 1895. He came to the United States in 1896 and became a specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis. In his retirement in Switzerland, Klebs studied and published in the field of medical bibliography, especially incunabula.
